The Vineyard Gazette described artist Vaclav Vytlacil (1892-1984) as “a major figure in modern art whose career touched Martha’s Vineyard in many ways through his adult life, as lover of the Island, in his professional activities as painter and teacher and in friendships that wereof lifelong duration...it was said of him that he “lived a life of vibrant colors and bold geometric design.”

A renowned artist and influential teacher, Vytlacil was an advocate for modern art and a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group. In the 1940s, he bought a cottage in Chilmark and returned each summer to paint and teach classes at the Martha’s Vineyard Arts Association.

This exhibition explores themes in Vytlacil’s work, from early landscapes to portraits and abstract scenes - many of which he painted here on the Vineyard.
