Biography/Historical Note

After World War II youth hostels became very popular as an inexpensive way to travel via hiking or biking. On Martha's Vineyard the former Naval Barracks at the airport were converted to an American Youth Hostel.

Scope and Content Note

The collection includes newspaper articles about the American Youth Hostel (AYH) movement and the local newsletters put out by AYH. In one of the scrapbooks hostellers were encouraged to draw pictures or write about their experiences on the road. Also included are photographs of the Martha's Vineyard hostel (barracks) and the travelers that stayed there.

Arrangement

The material is arranged chronologically.
