Biography/Historical Note
Laura Shelby Lee was born on May 2, 1877 in New York, New York to Cornelius Smith Lee and Mattie Walker (Blood) Lee. Laura had two younger brothers: James (1878- ) and Cornelius Smith Jr. (1882- ). Laura first came to Martha's Vineyard with her family in 1888. In 1902 she left New York City and moved to a house she had built in West Tisbury. Laura was a poet and a writer. Her writings on art and interior design were often published in such magazines as "House Beautiful". In 1937 Laura purchased a home in Vineyard Haven where she resided until her death on February 17, 1948.

This collection contains certificates, correspondence, a bible owned by Laura Shelby Lee's mother, and poetry and writings by Laura and other authors, among other things.
