Acquisition Information

One copy of "A Biographical Memoir of the Late Ichabod Norton, Esq. of Edgartown, Mass." by James Athearn Jones gift of Charlotte A. Pease in November 1923 (Accession no. 1923.155). Deed from Elihu Swasey to Ichabod Norton gift of the Mary Wimpenny Estate on May 15, 1992 (Accession no. 1992.023). The immediate source of acquisition and date of accession of the rest of the material is unknown.

Biography/Historical Note

Ichabod Norton was born on December 17, 1761 in Edgartown, Massachusetts, to Peter Norton and Sarah (Bassett) Norton. Ichabod was the second youngest of 13 siblings. He was a lifelong bachelor, known by family and friends as "Uncle Ichabod," who was monetarily involved in real estate, shipping and whaling vessels, mortgages, and livestock. Uncle Ichabod was said to be the wealthiest man on Martha's Vineyard in his lifetime. Ichabod Norton died on June 29, 1847 in Edgartown.

The collection contains bills, deeds, legal documents, letters, receipts, and other material belonging to Ichabod Norton (1761-1847). Also included in the collection are two copies of "A Biographical Memoir of the Late Ichabod Norton, Esq. of Edgartown, Mass." by James Athearn Jones, which was published after Ichabod's death.
