Biography/Historical Note
Seth Daggett was born on March 7, 1780 to William Daggett (1747-1834) and Mary (Stewart) Daggett (1748-1835). On February 28, 1799, he married Mary "Polly" Dunham (1781-1850). The couple lived in Homes Hole, Massachusetts (what is now considered Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts) and had 12 children: Leander (1800-), Edwin (1802-1825), Alphonzo Seth (1804-), Alphonzo Seth (1806-), Mary (1808-), Alonzo (1810-), Augustus Chandler Ludlow (1813-), Augustus Frederic (1814-), Oscar (1816-1856), Caroline West (1818-), Edwin (1821-), Georgiana (1827-1906). Seth Daggett was a pilot and wrote about pilot signals, pilotage, and navigation. He also wrote poetry. Seth kept the account book of the schooner Sylvia; master of the schooner Nancy; commander of the brig Fox and keeper of the account book; keeper of the account book of the schooner Sally & Betsy; master of the schooner Hero and keeper of the account book; and captain of the pilot boat Dove and keeper of the account book. Seth Daggett died on October 7, 1867.
