Biography/Historical Note

Frederick Baylies was born in Taunton, Massachusetts, on March 20, 1774 to Frederick Baylies (1741-1808) and Hannah (Brown) Baylies (1752-1821). Frederick married Sally Lee ( -1867) and the couple had four children: Frederick (1797- ), Sally (1799-1871), Harriet (1802-1865), and Henry. Between 1797 and 1802, Frederick and Sally moved to Edgartown, Massachusetts. Frederick Baylies was the last missionary employed by the Society for Propagating the Gospel Among the Indians and Others in North American to aid the Martha's Vineyard Native Americans. Frederick Baylies preached until his death on September 30, 1836 in Edgartown.

Sally Baylies married Jared Coffin (1790-1874) in 1819. Harriet Baylies married John Coffin (1783-1863) in 1821 and the couple lived in Edgartown. The Baylies sisters married Coffin brothers, the sons of John Coffin (1746-1819) and Mary (Wass) Coffin (1752-1836) of Edgartown.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains accounts, correspondence, publications, journals and scrapbooks belonging to various members of the Baylies family and the Coffin family. Also included in the collection are reports, sermons, and discourses disseminated by the Society for Propagating the Gospel Among the Indians and Others in North America.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by folder title and therein chronologically. Material with known accession numbers have the accession number written on the front of the folder.
